WENDYPEDIA (Pronunciation: WEN-dee-PEE-dee-ə) is a free, web-based, collaborative, monolingual encyclopedia project created with support (i.e., running on fumes) from the non-existent Wendymedia Foundation. Its name is a portmanteau[1] from Wendy (a female name[2]) and encyclopedia (an ancient Greek word meaning "the circle of arts and sciences"[3]). It is a play on the word Wikipedia[4] (obviously).
WENDYPEDIA consists of two parts: 1) the WIKI (where you are now) and 2) the CHRONOLOG (which is admittedly a blog, but that word is so lame). The two parts are partially integrated and are meant to complement each other.
WENDYPEDIA had its origins in a simple list of stipends paid by select PhD programs in the biological and biomedical sciences. This list was first created by Wendy in 2005 and has grown considerably over the years. WENDYPEDIA was intended to be a comprehensive guide to graduate study in the biosciences, and was launched in Fall 2007 Fall 2008 Fall 2009 will be launched Spring 2010.
